November 24, 2011
This Saturday and Sunday Barcelona will be in the spotlight for the last and final round of the IFSC Lead World Cup 2011. The event organized by the Spanish Federation FEDME together with Top 30, IFSC Global partner and leading producer of artificial climbing walls and holds, will take place at the Municipal Sports Pavilion, La Mar Bella, on November 26 and 27.
"2011 was a great year for sport climbing, that was shortlisted for inclusion in the sport programme of the 2020 Olympics. Being in Barcelona - 1992 Olympic city - for the final event of the season is a honor and a pleasure for our athletes and us" - commented IFSC President Marco Maria Scolaris.
After the Lead World Cup in 2009, Barcelona is hosting for the second time this year an IFSC event, as the IFSC Boulder World Cup took place in the early summer 2011. "We have proved our active involvement in competition climbing organizing the two World Cups in Barcelona this year" - said Alberto Marcos CEO of Top 30. "And we recently took on the challenge of running for the first time a World Cup in the Middle East, thus including the Arabic region in the family of sport climbing".
Almost 80 athletes from more than 20 countries confirmed their presence to the event. Spain, France, Japan, Korea, Russia, Slovenia, Ukraine and Austria will be the largest National teams bringing to the competition their best athletes. In the women’s field: Mina Markovic and Maja Vidmar form Slovenia; the Austrian Angela Eiter, Johanna Ernst, Katharina Posch; Caroline Ciavaldini from France; Jain Kim (KOR); Yana Chereshneva (RUS). In the men’s field: Jakob Schubert (AUT); the Spanish Ramón Julian Puigblanque, Manuel Romain (FRA); Sachi Amma from Japan; Sean Mccoll (CAN).
Waiting to see who will be the last winners of this World Cup round, we can certainly anticipate that the Austrian Jakob Shubert and the Slovenian Mina Markovic will be awarded the World Cup titles 2011, being the best athletes with their seven and five victories. Athletes will compete on the climbing wall provided and installed for the event by Top 30. Chiefroutesetter to coordinate the route setting for this last competition is Vincent De Girolamo, who will work together with the Spanish team of Patxi Arocena, Berta Martín, Carlos Logroño and Carles Brasco.
