Three days on the crags of Sicily

The delightful smells of Couscousfest still linger trough San Vito, and it's time to celebrate the first edition of another great international event: San Vito RockClimbing Festival. This edition featured 42 teams in the Marathon, and 114 in the Half Marathon, for a total of 500 climbers from all over Europe. Many "bigs" of Italian climbing scene: Mauro Calibani, Marzio Nardi, Alberto Gnerro, Alessandro Catalano, Adriano Trombetta, Matteo Gambaro, Luca Giammarco, Angelica Rainer, Elena Chiappa, Anna Torretta and many others who didn't miss the chance of climbing in a venue presenting an impressive development potential, definitely one of the most promising spot in European free-climbing!

The management of the event has been professionally carried out by Massimo Cappuccio and Peppe Gallo, cool and collected sicilian climbers who had compiled and written the first comprehensive climbing guidebook of Sicily, published by Versante Sud in three languages and reaching in a few years its second edition. Helped by the indefatigable Daniele Arena, they acted with such effectiveness that the participants never had the feeling that the festival was at its very first edition. They created purposely for the festival the association "Roccia di Sicilia".
The competition scenery was stunning: red rock, wonderfully carved by wind and time, breathtaking views, a warm and welcoming atmosphere shed by San Vito townspeople, the true heart of the event. The organization has been flawless, featuring a stage worthy of a huge event, a widescreen - never to be seen such a good one! - booths hosting the companies that supported and enriched the event. Last but not least, the icing on the cake: photo and video reportages shot by reliable and tristworthy professionals: Marco Spataro, Fabio Marino and Risk4Sport by Roberto and Luca Parisse.

The victory has been disputed in a perfect balance between a competition and a playful gathering, and has been grabbed by the team Marco Nescatelli and Matteo Gambaro, who committed hardly as well in studying the routes in the days before the event. The hardest route, Climbing Festival, has been climbed by Mauro Calibani the day after the competition.

The competition rules have been proved original, yet they could possibly be improved. The actual mechanism tends to emphasize the length "kilometers" of rock climbed (being a marathon...) rather then the rotpunkt. The score calculation depends on a lot of factors, such as difficulty, length of the route, the number of rests, the partner's performance.

A festival perfectly mixing tastes, perfumes and atmosphere of a wonderful location with the extraordinary lure of climbing.
