NEW AUSTRIAN ICEFALL WI7+

Albert Leichtfried and Benedikt Purner

On January 7, Albert Leichtfried and  Benedikt Purner, Alpine Guides from Austria and very talented extreme ice routes climbers, established a new thin and steep 300 meters ice fall, Centercourt that has pitches of WI6+, WI7+, and WI6 on poorly bonded ice.

Last December, the duo climbed another extreme line, Moonwalk 1000m WI6 M7 in Austria’s Zillertal Alps.

The new icefall is located in Eisarena in Gasteinertal (Austria), where Leichtfried and Purner have repeated hard icefalls as Supervisor 270m, WI6 and Seidenraupe Direkt 200m WI5.

Leichtfried took one and a half hours to lead the crux second pitch. He placed a single bolt on lead , but the crux moves were very poorly protected.

All around the world there are only two other icefalls of such a difficulty: Second choice by Will Gadd in  Norway, and  Senda reale in Chile by Albert Leichtfried and recently disappeared Ari Berger.
