GASHERBRUM I - FIRST WINTER ASCENT

On the 9th March Adam Bielecki and Janusz Golab reached the summit of Gasherbrum I (8068m) at 8:30am. A small Polish expedition has been successful in making the first winter ascent, only the second of the five Karakoram 8,000ers to be climbed in the winter season. Expedition leader Hajzer is a strong high-altitude mountaineer, having climbed with the great Jerzy Kukuczka and made the first winter ascent of Annapurna.
Adam Bielecki (28) last year climbed Makalu without O2 and when 17 became the youngest person to climb Khan Tengri .
Janusz Golab (43) is one of the most famous of Polish alpinists, he made the first winter ascent of Manitua, and the second ascent of Extreme Dream, on the Grandes Jorasses. and a new route on the West Face of the Petit Dru. He made also new route on Kedar Dome (Himalaya - Garhwal)
