Large fractures on Whymper serac
In August 2009 the Mayor of Courmayeur had prohibited the transit area under the serac Whymper on the southern wall of the Grandes Jorasses, where goes up the normal route of the mountain.
The order of prohibition was issued to the danger of collapse of major portions of the same serac after a team of glaciologists had an inspection.
Now the office of High Mountain Chamonix warns about the presence of two large fractures in the lower and middle section of serac Whymper and recommeds not to climb. the normal route.
