RIEGLER 1^ FREE ASCENT OF NON CI RESTA CHE PIANGERE

IX+/X- at Piz Ciavazes, Dolomites

January 19, 2012

The brothers Florian and Martin Riegler made on Jan.12  the first free ascent (and the first winter ascent ) of "Non ci resta che piangere” the route opened on Piz Ciavazes (Dolomites)  by Edy Boldrin and Dario Feller in 1990 , and originally graded 7a/A2 .

The route climbs between the dihedral of theVia Zeni e and the route Italia61 overcoming in the center a series of slabs and two large overhangs.

In 2011, the Riegler, after agreeing  with the openers, replaced the old material and placed  two new belays

On January 12 it was the moment of the first Redpoint, although some holds were covered by ice. According to the two brothers from South Tyrol, difficulties are similar to those of Italia61, (IX + / X-) but with much more aleatory protections.
The rock is generally good.

Italia61 was opened in 1961 by Bepi De Francesch, free ascended by Mauro "Bubu" Bole in 2002 and repeated  a short time later by the Riegler.
