UELI STECK WON KARL UNTERKIRCHER AWARD
In Selva Val Gardena on July 10th

Karl Unterkircher Award is an award established in memory of the Val Gardena’s talented climber perished in 2008 on Nanga Parbat when establishing a new route.
The first climber to win this prestigious award, during a two-day event, is the Swiss Ueli Steck.
The results achieved in 2009 by Ueli are amazing and give a picture of his versatility ranging from ascension in record time north of the Matterhorn (4478m) by classical Smith (1 hour and 56 minutes) to the almost completely free onsight of Golden Gate (33 pitches - 8a) on El Capitan in Yosemite Valley in California, to the summit of Gasherbrum II (8035 m) and Makalu (8463 m).
The other nominees were the Swiss brothers Simon and Samuel Anthamatten with Michael Lerjen for the route first ascended on Jasemba (7350m), the Slovenians Marko Prezelj, Luka Lindic and Rok Blagus for the three new routes on peaks of Bhagirati, (6194 - 6512m) , Robert Jasper and Roger Schäli who free ascended the Japanese Direttissima on Eiger North wall and Denis Urubko and Simone Moro for their winter ascent at Makalu (8463m).
The first prize is a 13 pounds trophy representing Sassolungo which shows a smiling Karl, plus the sum of 3000 euros. $ 1,000 and a trophy went to other nominated.
