In Selva Val Gardena on July 10th

July 23, 2010

Karl Unterkircher Award is an award established in memory of the Val Gardena’s  talented climber perished  in 2008 on  Nanga Parbat when establishing   a new route.
The first climber to win this prestigious award, during a two-day event, is the Swiss Ueli Steck.

The results achieved in 2009 by Ueli are amazing and give a picture of his versatility ranging from ascension in record time north of the Matterhorn (4478m) by classical Smith (1 hour and 56 minutes) to the almost completely free  onsight of Golden Gate (33 pitches - 8a) on El Capitan in Yosemite Valley in California, to the summit of Gasherbrum II (8035 m) and Makalu (8463 m).

The other nominees were the Swiss brothers Simon and Samuel Anthamatten with Michael Lerjen  for the route  first ascended on Jasemba (7350m), the Slovenians Marko Prezelj, Luka Lindic and Rok Blagus  for the three new routes on peaks of Bhagirati, (6194 - 6512m) ,  Robert Jasper  and  Roger Schäli who free ascended the Japanese Direttissima on Eiger North wall   and  Denis Urubko and Simone Moro for their winter ascent at Makalu (8463m).
