MATT BUSH, KNIGHT OF FREE SOLO - Up-Climbing

MATT BUSH, KNIGHT OF FREE SOLO

Matt Bush, free solo specialist, made South Africa a kind of second home. There he finds lines, projects and dreams to climb in this style, loved or rejected as non-example. What is certain is that climbers like Alex Honnold or Jordi Salas don’t seem freaked out, unable to control emotions or adrenaline junkies.
Like them, in Matt’s solo is the environment, the awareness of being part of it, to make sense of the climb. “We can play with measurements in soccer or rugby or cricket because we create the rules,” says Bush. “But nature has its own rules. How do you measure nature? And why the need to quantify and qualify – for one’s ego or satisfaction? To gauge personal progress? It seems to have less and less relevance for me. A greater motivation is my love for what I do. How does one measure the free solo experience, anyway? It’s free. It’s free solo. It doesn’t have a border or boundary or barrier.”
In this land of strong colors and the wide open spaces, for years Matt performs spectacular climbs for example in Waterval Boven, Montagu and to Table Mountain, which has also opened routes as Simplicity (7b) or Synapse Direct (7b+) on the Table Mountain.
The Soloist collects sequences of his performance and the one minute’s trailer really sweating hands and shake your wrists.
