Patagonia: Cloud Ridge Kit

Test of the new outfit designed for the most humid situations

30 May 2017
To test the effectiveness of the new Patagonia Cloud Ridge kit, made up of jackets and pants, I chose to make some excursions on the spring days featuring the worst weather conditions.

It’s raining: let's go out?

The two garments are in fact proposed by the californian company as a support to deal with moisture and rain, and it is in those situations that they wished to wear them.

The jacket fits the body and protects it in a few moments. The zipper that closes on the ventral area reaches and covers the lower part of the face, while the tallest one and the forehead are wrapped in a hood that can be unraveled with immediacy and has a simple but useful.

The adjustment systems, two for the hood and one in the brim, are provided with easy-access and easy-to-use elastic cord, even when I wear the gloves.

The trousers are also covered with a zip, they have a partially elasticated waist belt, and offer the possibility of further adjustment with the inner lanyard. The long side hinge (also useful for ventilating the leg) makes it quick and easy to wear even with boots, which are well wrapped with a double release clamp.

During the second exit, over three and a half hours of continuous rain did not create any problems with the waterproof sealing fabric. To ensure the functionality of the Cloud Ridge kit, Patagonia has entrusted the 3-layer H2No ™ Performance Standard shell, equipped with recyclable polyester membrane and recycled polyester outdoor fabric with long lasting water repellent DWR treatment. A choice that has fully paid me in terms of water protection, its breathability, but also as the skin's pleasing fabric, supported in the micro fleece jacket for the back of the neck and the chin that have Avoided possible annoying rubbings.

During the tests carried out in the rain water did not find inputs. A fundamental contribution is provided, in addition to the fabric characteristics, even by the spreading of the front zipper, and in the same way as those that close the two pockets of the hands. Their position, in the man tested model (it is also available for women), does not interfere either with the ventral closure of the backpack or with the upper ankle. The cuffs are also protected by the rain inlet, with a simple tear-off closure.

As a final note I can not underline the appreciation for the lightness of the kit (391 grams for the jacket and 309 for the trousers). The small weight and the endowment of a pocket bag for each garment led me to put them both in the backpack during a multipitch climbing route in Sarca Valley, in a day from uncertain meteorological conditions without noticeable significant bulging or weight gain.

The functionality of the two garments has been fully verified.

The regular fit allows you to wear even a lightweight head, so you do not have to give up on the mountains even when weather conditions are not favorable.

It’s raining: let's go out? With this lightweight and reliable Patagonia outfit you can safely answer yes.
