10 Aug [VIDEO] Committed—Episode 3
The third episode dedicated to the one-day ascent of Odyssee, the hardest route of this legendary and severe wall.
After the 9a of Sprengstoff and Greenspit‘s trad crack, the third episode of the Committed series promoted by Black Diamond completes the celebration of the incredible versatility of Barbara Zangerl and Jacopo Larcher, taking us to one of the hardest and most impressive multipitches in the Alps!
One of the most legendary and scary walls in the world, the North Face of the Eiger, where we can also find Odyssee, the multipitch route opened by Roger Schaeli, Simon Gietl and Robert Jasper in 2015 which, in 33 pitches, extends for 1400 meters on this historic peak of the world mountaineering. The difficulties reach the 8a+, in addition to the austerity of the face, the loose rock and above all the large portions that are often wet and the unstable weather, which are the aspects that Babsi and Jacopo had to deal with in particular.
In 2018 the two made the second free ascent of Odyssee, staying on the wall for four days. Since then, the daring idea of a one-day ascent took off, not so much to set a record – as Babsi tells us in the video – but to climb it with a different approach.
The result is what we see in this episode: a battle with the wet rock, the frustration of a failed attempt at the last (which also become very dangerous) because of a sudden storm and also the temptation to leave the project.
But this was not the case, and in August 2020, starting in the middle of the night, Jacopo and Babsi managed to climb Odyssee in 16 hours, writing another great climbing page on this symbolic mountain.
In this video, the exciting story of this ascent, from the very words of this exceptional pair of climbers!
