On July 4, Americans Dave Burdick and John Frieh first ascended the beautiful west ridge of Burkett Needle in southeast Alaska .
They climbed the route, Smash and Grab (IV 5.8 M4), in a single day and descended by rappelling the south pillar, first climbed in 1995.
Burdick and Frieh believe this was the fifth ascent of Burkett Needle, summited in 1964 by Dan Davis and Layton Kor.
On may 1999, French Lionel Daudet, Sebastien Foissac first climbed on the southeast wall – during the 3rd ascent of the mountain – Le Voyage des Clochards Celestes (VI 7a+ A3+, ca. 1200m).
