20 Aug Auer and Mayr onsight La Cattedrale in Marmolada
In late July Austrian Hansjörg Auer and Much Mayr travelled to South Face of the Marmolada, where in 2007 Auer made the free solo ascent of The Fish, climbing all 33 pitches of this 930m route (7b+) in 2 hours and 55 minutes.
The two made the third free ascent of Via della Cattedrale, a route put up in two stages during 1983 and ’85 by Graziano Maffei: leading through, Auer and Mayr on-sighted the route. Mayr led the crux , then lowered so Auer could also lead it.
The second free ascent of La Cattedrale was made this summer by Florian Riegler with Rebecca Finch, Riegler climbed the route in 12 hours with no falls, having made several previous attempts this year.
Hansjörg Auer made also the first continuous free ascent of Silberschrei (nine pitches, two of 7c) on the West Face of the Sass dela Crusc, a route that – together with Thomas Schrieber – first climbed in 2005.
