08 May High altitude ladies
This year, 4 strong female climbers will attempt the ascent of the Himalayan peak of Kangchenjunga: the Italian Nives Meroi, the Spaniard Edurne Pasaban, the Corean Oh Eun-sun and the Polish Kinga Baranowska. .
Nives Meroi climbed eleven 8000ers with no oxigen aid; in march 2009, when she landed in Katmandu, could not reach Kangchenjunga in reason of the strikes in the region and was forced to change plan and go to Annapurna. Again, she had to change her programs, the conditions of Annapurna being too dangerous for a safe climb. She reached few days ago the base camp of Kangchenjunga
Edurne Pasaban climbed eleven 8000ers: Kangchenjunga Shisha Pangma and Annapurna are missing to complete the climb of all 14 world’s highest mountains.
Kinga Baranowska ascended until now Dhaulagiri,Cho Oyu Broad Peak, Nanga Parbat and Manaslu.
Oh Eun-sun was the first female climber to ascent 4x8000ers in one year with no oxigen aid; she already climbed nine 8000ers and she seeks to climb all the 14 highest peaks by 2010.
Kangchenjunga is the third highest mountain in the world and it has only been climbed by two women: Ginette Harrison in 1998 and Gerlinde Kaltenbrunner in may 2006. In 1992 Wanda Rutkiewicz, the great Polish climber, died near the summit after refusing to descend in an approaching storm.
