The French company has provided its partners with the knowledge and technique of Michelin designers, adapting their latest generation technologies to outdoor sports products, thus providing soles that can best respond to the most critical situations.

On the occasion of the OUT DOOR Friedrichshafen fair, which took place from 18 to 21 June, MICHELIN presented three new partners: BOREAL, VIKING and WILD COUNTRY. By extending the circle of collaborators together with GARMOUNT, MAMMUT and MILLET, Michelin adds the segments of the approach and climbing to its own field of action.

The Spanish company BOREAL entrusted MICHELIN’s skills to enhance the approach range of its Multi Activity collection. The technical footwear for the cliff approach is quite unique. They must provide support, cushioning and adherence on difficult and mixed terrain, typical features of a hiking shoe, but at the same time provide the benefits of a climbing shoe: traction and adaptability to more technical steps. The designers were inspired by the MICHELIN Starcross 5 Hard tire for cross motorcycle.
The design of the new MICHELIN sole made with and for BOREAL in the Shango model recalls the features of this tire, starting from sturdy shoulder pads and heel area that provide stability and durability. The distance between one plug and the other is functional to a greater self-cleaning. The maximum efficiency on difficult surfaces is also guaranteed by the special Extreme Outdoor Compound (OCX) compound, suitable for extreme outdoor activities, which adheres to maximum wetness, even on wet and slippery surfaces, and good durability. The footwear is able to combine progressive traction and adaptability, grip and cushioning. The microfiber upper with injected bottom ensures abrasion resistance, while the interior lining offers comfort and ventilation.

Jesus Garcia Frances Managing Director at Boreal Outdoor
The partnership with MICHELIN was born at the OutDoor fair in Friedrichshafen in 2016. We met and we immediately decided that we would cooperate. Just because of its tire experience, we have recognized the validity of Michelin’s deep knowledge of rubber compounds and transferring this to the outside world can surely lead to excellent products“.

Summing up the points on which both MICHELIN and BOREAL are pointing to the innovation of the SHANGO model are:

  • Climbing areas for traction and adaptability to the rocks
  • Spacers spaced to increase self-cleaning
  • Robust shoulders for stability and stability durability
  • Heel-to-toe dowels follow the natural course of the foot providing support and a progressive traction
  • Weave inserts increase adaptability on irregular terrain
  • Robust ankles in the heel area for stability and durability
