Valchiavenna Skyrace - Up-Climbing

Valchiavenna Skyrace

Sunday 7th August, 21 km along the paths of the Valle del Drogo will represent the sixth staging of the Valchiavenna skyrace.

The setting could hardly be more stimulating. The steps forming part of an ancient mule-track, sections along the banks of lago del Truzzo, a technical descent through woodland and plenty other exciting features.

Since last year the 20.74km race has incorporated the 1000m metres or so along the lake. “The formula of the main race has not changed with respect to the last two years” Stefano Morelli the representative of San Bernardo Consorzio who are responsible for the organisation explains “For 3 years now working closely with our Sport race Valtellina colleagues, the event has been accepted as part of the Skrace calendar, and athletes are obliged to conform to the Fisky/Csen standards.

In order to take advantage of one of the most picturesque spots we have included a section along the lake and this year the gran premio della montagna will be positioned precisely here, in one of the most spectacular points along the track”.

The skyrace comprises a looped circuit with start and finish in the forecourt of the San Bernardo church, part of the San Giacomo Filippo municipality, at 1034m. Then it climbs to San Rocco, Alpe Drogo, takes in the gran premio in the Truzzo basin, at 2150m. After a series of ups and downs, through the villages of Lendine, Laguzzolo, Zena and Olmo, the athletes return to their point of departure and an appreciative public. “The event is a splendid opportunity to rediscover one of the most impressive parts of Valle Spluga, climbing from Chiavenna up to the pass,” Morelli expounds “the old mule-track up to Truzzo for example was created in the early 20th century”.
