14 May Young guns: Normand and Whaley
Maho Normand and Owen Whaley on extreme pitches.
Accustomed to extreme numbers done by younger and younger climbers, every now and then we lose the value of extreme climbing done by young talents. Today we are talking about two strong climbers under twenty, capable of climbing pitches of 8c and 9a making them seem child’s play…
First on the list, just sixteen, is Maho Normand. During a night session in Orgon, the young climber managed to climb L’irrévérence, a difficult 8c route. This is not the hardest pitch he has climbed in his career, Maho boasts a resume with three 8c+ despite his young age. During the last year he got injured but he is already back onfire, so much so that he is already working on a 9a+!
Same for Owen Whaley, just eighteen and super shrewd climber. At Robbers Rost, Owen dedicated himself and, having already tried it last year, he climbed a local classic. We are talking about Dad Bod, a physical pitch that reaches the grade of 9a, starting immediately very intensely. Last year Owen was also able to climb Manphibian and Arrested Development, his first 9a.
