Second 9a for Katherine Choong: at Gimmelwald climbs Jungfrau Marathon
The Swiss climber strong in the Bernese Alps19 October 2019
A year and some months later first one, Katherine Choong resolved another 9a, Jungfrau Marathon in the Bernese Alps.
Project closed for the Swiss Katherine Choong who after more then one year of attempt, climbed Jungfrau Marathon, 9a route in Gimmelwald, Switzerland. This is the second 9a for this reserved but ultra-determined and incisive climber after she closed Cabane au Canada in Rawyl in August 2018.
"Gimmelwald is a magical place" says Katherine "where you are surrounded by snow-capped mountains, cows and pastures and tranquility. Jungfrau Marathon is about twenty meters long in overhang and the crux is a shoulder followed by a strong extension that for a short person like me is a throw. I started trying it last October and already by November I was near to close it but then the snow came and I had to stop.
In the spring it rained a lot and then came the heat and the World Cup races. I had to postpone a lot, I had not closed anything neither in the race nor on rock and I was starting to have some doubts about the success.
When I tried again, they showed me a different way to go through the crux because I was stubborn about mine. I passed and on the first attempt of the next session I closed it! If it weren't for the friends who encouraged me and helped me with the method, I would never have done it!"
