Avalanche on the Nevado Mateo, four dead in Peru
Spanish team with the local guide
15 January 2019Serious accident in Peru where four climbers lost their lives following an avalanche and a fifth was saved miraculously from Rescues.
Three Spanish mountaineers and a Peruvian guide are the last victims of the mountain who lost their lives on January 6th in Cordillera Blanca, Peru, due to an avalanche that struck them during an expedition to the Nevado Mateo, a mountain of 5150 meters. A climb that is not particularly demanding but that has left no way out to Adrià San Juan, Sergi Porteros and Gerard Borull and the Peruvian guide Rubén Darío Alva. The fourth member of the Spanish group instead, Pablo Belmonte Calderón, was the only survivor. The four of them shared a passion for the mountains as a young man and had traveled several times in South America. The accident seems to have occurred around noon on Sunday, shortly after reaching the summit and then in the descent phase.
