Robbie Phillips and Jacob Cook repeated the route free23 May 2016
Young British climbers Robbie Phillips and Jacob Cook free climbed the thirty pitches of the route El Nino, on Yosemite Valley's El Capitan.
The route, opened and free climbed in 1998 by the Huber brothers, is graded up to 5.13c, that translates roughly into French 8a+. Unlike many other routes on this awesome wall, this routes offers mainly face climbing instead of cracks and offwidths. It was the first time in the Valley for Phillips, and also his first big wall experience. The young party spent various day on the wall, as usual facing many mishaps, first of all the loss of their tea.
"The box must have fallen - tells Phillips - it was very depressing. We had to drink Clif bars in hot water in the mornings. It was pretty awful."
